Jones, Griffith

Jones, Griffith
(1683–1761)
   Educator and Missionary.
Jones was born into a non-conformist family, but he was ordained into the ministry of the Church of England at the age of twenty-five. As well as serving a parish, he made long preaching tours around the Welsh valleys. Then in 1730 he started organising ‘circulating schools’ for both children and adults. Making use of travelling teachers, the instruction was given mainly in reading the Welsh Bible. By the time of his death, more than three thousand of these ‘schools’ had been opened. Daniel Rowland, one founder of Welsh Methodism, was converted through Jones’s efforts.
